Finding the right golf instructor is an important step to improving your game. At the Stanford Golf Course, our Professionals are certified to teach every level of golfer, from beginners to scratch players.

All lessons are held in a reserved, grass section of the Stanford Golf Learning Center, with 9-hole playing lessons offered on the spectacular Stanford Golf Course. All instructors teach to the general public and both private and group lessons are offered. Rates vary by instructor and lessons are offered in 30, 45 and 60 minute increments.

Meet the Professional Staff

Shannon90Shannon Donlon, General Manager and Head Professional. PGA Class A Member. Prior to joining Stanford, Shannon taught for four years at the Olympic Club after being Head professional at Poppy Hills Golf Club in Pebble Beach. Shannon is available for private or group instruction by appointment only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Herman90Herman McKee, Assistant Manager, Assistant Professional. His tenure with the Course is the longest of any member on the teaching staff, having come to Stanford in 1983. In addition to his duties at the Course, Herman also helps manage and serves as an instructor at the Stanford Junior Golf Academy.

RussV-New90Russ Vander Sluis, Golf Professional, has been teaching at Stanford Golf Course since 2001. Russ competed in several pro tournaments in Japan in 1994 and founded the Vander Sluis Golf Academy in Toyko where he taught for six years and held golf clinics throughout Asia. Russ also has a four year teaching degree from Calvin College in Michigan.

TerryG-90Terry Gingell, Assistant Professional, PGA Class A, joined Stanford Golf Course as an assistant golf professional in July 2011. Terry has been teaching and coaching golf for more than twenty years. Terry is well versed in the methodologies of the best teaching professionals and has attended countless seminars and schools.

JimMiller90Jim Miller, PGA Class A member, was originally hired in 1993 to teach the Stanford P.E golf classes. In May 2011, Jim joined the Stanford golf operations team as an assistant golf professional. Jim has over 20 years of experience in the golf industry, teaching golf to students of all playing abilities. Jim is a graduate of UCLA.

CaseyH-90Casey Hall, LPGA Class A Member, Tournament Director and Membership Coordinator. Casey has been coaching and teaching in the Bay Area for 15 years and provides both private and group instruction for every age and skill level, with a focus on women and juniors. In 2017, Casey created, launched and became the official Site Director for the first ever LPGA*USGA Girls Golf Program at Stanford.

Phil Marrone, PGA Class A Professional, has served on the staff at Stanford Golf Course since 1984. Phil has also worked at Hillcrest Country Club and Crane Creek Country Club, both of Boise, Idaho. He has held the head coaching position at Menlo College for seven years. A veteran of over 10,000 lessons, Phil's speciality is short game instruction.
